Just published and available in all good bookstores, Amazon, Waterstones, Smiths etc. or directly from Ozaru Books, Street Acre, St Nicholas-at-wade, Birchington, CT7 0NG, U.K. Tel: (+44) 01843 847701. web site: htp://ozaru.net/TurnersMargateContemporary.aspx. Entitled: "Turner's Margate through contemporary eyes - the Viney letters." edited by local man Stephen Channing. This book contains a wealth of information about Margate (verbatim) in the early 19th century, with over 80 local names mentioned. This facinating account has been compiled by Stephen Channing - a resident of Margate - into book form from letters written by a chap called Stewart Viney. In the 1820s-40s Stewart Viney lived just yards from the artist JMW Turner and his mistress Mrs Booth alongside Margate's harbour area. The writings are full of wit and intelligent banter concerning Margate and its many interesting characters. Stewart Viney also writes about his personal experiences at places like the Theatre Royal, Tivoli Gardens, libraries, bathing rooms, the Assembly Rooms and Margate's many Bazaars. He talks of old sailing ships and the early steam ships, Margate's shipbuilding families, ghosts, smuggling, Margate's first regatta, Hoodening, artists and their "lack of perspective", working for John Boys the solicitor, and much much more. This book contains 92 pages, approx 9 x 6 in size and only costs £7.99. This is a must for local historians, genealogists and the like, as well as the Turner buff who would like to gain an insight into the Margate that Turner was experiencing at the same time - enjoy.
